Take Care Of Your Skin

By Sheila Halluem

Skin needs protection, as it is an organ that can sustain damage easily. Everyone has a great time in summer with friends and family, and much of that is outside in the summer sun. Too much sun exposure will be damaging to your skin, and the longer you stay in the sun, the worse it will be. Sunscreens are effective ways of protecting the skin during the summer months. Here we will be going over some of the ways that sunscreen helps protect skin, and showing how to get the most benefit from it.

Why should we wear sunscreen?

The ozone layer stops much of the ultraviolet light coming from the sun, but not all. The UV rays that do make it through the ozone layer can be very harmful to skin. Over time, the skin cells can be stimulated to grow to an extent where their growth cannot be controlled anymore. One of the possible results of this is skin cancer. Growth of moles is also a consequence, and cancer can form within them as well. The disease resulting from this is called melanoma.

There are actually two kinds of UV rays that the sun emits. These are UVA and UVB. They penetrate beneath the skin, and from there can have a negative effect on the immune system. Wrinkles can also be formed more quickly from this, and sunburns can happen as well. Damage to skin can be minimized as less UV light will be absorbed by the skin by using sunscreen.

What is SPF?

The labels on any bottle of sunscreen at your local market or drugstore will have the term "SPF" on them, and a number will follow. Although UVA has no standard for measure, the SPF (sun protection factor) can measure how much UVB will be reflected away from our skin. SPF also indicates how long it would take for the UVB rays to penetrate the skin and cause sunburn.

There are different strengths of sunscreens are available with SPF numbers ranging from 15 to 60. In theory, the higher the SPF number, the better the protection. There is some room for error in these numbers though, so 15 is not generally regarded as enough protection, so it's wise to use a higher SPF than 15.

What does sunscreen contain?

There are a wide variety of ingredients that sunscreens contain that are specially selected due to their properties that shield the skin from damage. Sunscreens often contain sulisobenzone, avobenzone, and octyl salicylate, among other ingredients.

Sunscreens are usually available as creams and sprays. Either one is as effective as the other.

What risks are involved with sunscreen, if any?

Concerns have been raised about certain ingredients within sunscreens. There have been many tests done on sunscreens that disprove allegations that they could cause melanoma to form. Oestrogen-based ingredients in sunscreen such as Oxybenzone could alter hormone levels once they are absorbed by the skin. Despite those ideas, studies have proven that it is untrue, and the body just gets rid of these compounds quickly and easily.

Sunscreen has incredible benefits, and the risks are almost nil, so it's a wise decision to use it.

Synopsis

Summer is the most important time to be conscious of skin care. The risk of skin cancer goes down when someone uses sunscreen to shield their skin from the sun's damaging UV rays. Sunscreen should be applied liberally in the hot summer weather.
