The Mystery of Migraine Headaches and Why They Happen

By Vanessa Summer

Headaches can be terribly debilitating, and it is something the majority of us have had the misfortune to withstand. Migraine headaches are not the common run of the mill form of headache. In fact, I used to have migraines when I was very young but they stopped. I am so grateful they stopped given that they were exceedingly painful. There is much to be learned about migraines because they are not fully understood by researchers. There are numerous reasons for this not the least of which is people can respond to and feel pain in different ways. This is a tremendously intricate area, and it seems doctors have a long way to search before a clear picture comes out.

As you can envision, there continues to be a great deal of knowledge gathered over the years. To begin with, migraines are sometimes termed, vascular headaches, which means the vascular system of blood veins as well as arteries. People are known to get a migraine when subjected to extreme temperatures in either direction. Deprivation of sleep or becoming really hungry can bring one of these painful headaches to the forefront. So all of this clearly reveals that environmental affects carry out a role at least with some affected individuals. We pointed out several areas, already, but there are others such as chronic stress.

Relating to the overwhelming pain, migraines are distinct because the pain appears to take more time to build up. However, that is just an additional clue about migraines, but every last piece of the puzzle helps. These revelations just seem to be more pieces to the entire puzzle. There could perhaps be a genetic factor involved, however that does not seem to include all migraine sufferers. But since not everyone is in that category, then that leads doctors to examine ourside causes.

Swings in the levels of hormones can bring on these headaches in certain women. In fact, incidences of migraines have been noted during the times just prior to or after the menstrual cycle occurs. Estrogen doesn't continue being stable at these situations for women. Then again, other major hormonal shifts occur during pregnancy and menopause. A proportion of women will likely have a greater frequency of migraine attacks during these periods. It could be useful to note that the technique generally known as HRT, hormonal replacement therapy, can make migraines more serious than they already are. Conversely, all of those experiences do not materialize to all women who are afflicted by migraines.

There are numerous other factors involved that may trigger a migraine including sensory arousal such as loud noises, certain odors, bright lights and an array of smells like perfumes and other different odors. Doctors are unable to establish the exact mechanism that leads to someone enduring a migraine. Still there are physical factors with some people including intensive physical exertion of almost any kind. All of that makes unraveling the mystery of migraines a lot more difficult.
